New Host, New Design

If you’re seeing this post, welcome to the new site! I’ve moved my blog to a shiny new virtual private server on Slicehost, and tweaked the design a bit. The three-column layout of the old design was a little bit cluttered, so I’m hoping the new simplified layout is a little easier on the eyes. Let me know what you think, and if you run into any problems.

Discord&Rhyme Joins The Lounge

Twitter is fantastic, because you can use it to meet some really interesting people. One such person I ran into in the Twitterverse is James Avery, who runs The Lounge, an internet ad network focused on technology. When he invited me to join the .NET Small Publishers Room, I was flattered, because I had already subscribed to several of the blogs that were featured there. It’s an honor to be featured alongside such auspicious company.

For those that read my blog from the site itself, you’ll notice a small ad in the top right corner. For those that read the RSS feed, you won’t notice any changes.

New Look

I’m trying out a new look on the site. Unfortunately, I had to ditch Disqus, so a few comments were lost. I was sort of disappointed it doesn’t show trackbacks/pingbacks anyway. I’m going to be tweaking things in the next few days, so let me know if you notice anything wonky. :)

Glitches

Over the weekend, PHP was upgraded on the webserver that hosts my blog, and somehow the MySQL database was corrupted. I was able to re-post the missing entries, but the comments are lost. Sorry for the repeats, and let me know if you notice anything funky. :)

Off the Rails

I think Dreamhost did something screwy with either Ruby or Rails, and it had the nice side effect of clobbering my blog. After much tinkering, it’s back up (obviously), but in a stroke of brilliance, I deleted my theme. Excuse the mess for the next few days as I get things re-organized.

Update: Something continues to be flaky, and I haven’t had the time to dig into it. I think I might take this opportunity to move away from Mephisto and Dreamhost anyway. The new Movable Type beta looks pretty slick, and I have my own hosting now…

Now Publishing With Impunity

Today, I decided to take the plunge and migrate from Wordpress to Mephisto. I checked out the trial and really liked the administration console and the fact that it supports Markdown, so I figured I’d give it a shot.

The Wordpress conversion script worked pretty well; I only had to clean up some spam that was still stuck in the Akismet filter. If anything is off-kilter in the next few days, it’s because I’m still working to fix some of the markup problems.

New Host!

I just transferred the site over to DreamHost! So far I’m very impressed. If there’s anything flaky about the site for the next couple of days, it’s probably either due to the move or because I’m tinkering with something. :)
